New device helps parents track their children

Posted: Updated:

It's the only day of the year we actually encourage our kids to go up to strangers on purpose. But as fun and exciting as Halloween can be, it's also a stressful day for parents who want their kids to be safe.

But a new device can help cut down on that. It fits in the palm of your hand and can last up to 20 days on a single charge.

So what does it do?

"It'll show me the location of where that device is," said Tom Collopy, CEO of Securus. "And I can say, ‘Oh that's Johnny's friend's house - I'm comfortable now.'"

Securus is based in Cary and Collopy said he's in the business of giving parents peace of mind.

"It's a very distracting time for kids," Collopy said.

The device called an eZoom is basically a modified GPS.

"You can have it set up so that you just want them to stay within a certain area," Collopy said. "And we call that a safe spot."

If your child goes beyond the "safe spot" radius, you get a text message alerting you.

Parents like Celia McCauley of Raleigh believe Halloween is getting scarier every year.

"You hear things and it's scary what people come up with," McCauley said.

Her daughter, Ashley, is 12 and said she wouldn't mind having the eZoom around, especially with its SOS button that a child can press to let the parents know something has gone wrong.

"I think it would keep me safe and she could know where I am," Ashley said.

The first step for someone with the eZoom is to set up their safe spots.

"Peace of mind is what we are trying to offer," Collopy said.

The device costs roughly $100 plus the cost of a monthly subscription.
