Midnight Madness caps off ECU's 'Halloweek'

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. -

For most of us, it's Halloween; but for ECU students, it’s Halloweek.

From horror movie marathons to haunted houses, they kicked off the celebration days ago. It all culminates Thursday night at Midnight Madness.

Organizers are already decorating for the event, which is in its 20th year. To mark the milestone, ECU officials are moving it to Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium's bleacher area for the first time.

No alcohol is allowed, but students can play games, sing karaoke and compete in a costume contest.

"A lot of our students are looking for that alternative smoke-free, alcohol-free event,” says Emily McLamb, the director for students activities and organizations. “And so this is a great opportunity for them to come to a safe environment on Halloween night as opposed to maybe the downtown scene."

Officials expect thousands of students to show up, which means ECU police will be out in full force.

"We'll have eight [officers] that will be up here at the Midnight Madness event and then the others will be spread out across campus at different hot spot locations to make sure there is a safe campus environment for all of our students,” says Lt. Chris Sutton of ECU Police.

The event kicks off at 10 p.m. and runs until 2 a.m.

Costume contest registration begins at 10:00 p.m. Judging will be at 11:00 p.m. for scariest costume, 12:00 a.m. for group/duo (not to exceed 5 students) and 1:00 a.m. for best overall. Each category winner will receive a $200 gift card.

Register your guest by 8 p.m. on Oct. 31 . One guest per registered student permitted. Walk-up guest registration is available from 9:30 p.m. - 1:00 a.m. on Halloween night at the guest kiosk at Gate 7 for $5. Each person should have valid photo identification as well as an ECU 1 card.

Route 950, otherwise known as the Pirate Ride Express, will be modified to access Minges Coliseum that night and will be designated as the Midnight Madness shuttle.

Students requesting accommodations under the American Disabilities Act should contact the Department of Disability Support Services at least 48 hours prior to the event at (252) 737-1016.
