Greenville duplex fire intentionally started

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Police are calling a Greenville duplex fire an arson.

The building on Bragg Circle caught fire Wednesday afternoon.

A witness tells 9 On Your Side she heard an explosion and thinks the hot water heater may have blown.

However, police conducted an investigation, and determined the fire was intentionally set. Police say the reports of "explosions" were determined to be inflated automobile tires that made a loud noise as they burned.

Crews extinguished the fire and contained it to Apartment A. The residents of Apartment B can return to their home, which has smoke and water damage. Apartment A is considered uninhabitable until the heavy fire damage can be repaired. The Red Cross responded and provided assistance for the residents in both units.

One Greenville Fire/Rescue employee was accidentally struck in the face with a piece of equipment during cleanup, receiving a moderate injury.

6 people lived in the duplex. They all got out safely.
