Officials offer reward in death of red wolf in NC

Posted: Updated:

MANTEO, N.C. (AP) - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is offering a reward for information leading to an arrest in the death of a red wolf.

A statement said the wolf was found on Monday with what's believed to be a gunshot wound south of Roper in Washington County.

According to the service, nine red wolves have died since the start of the year. Of those, three were struck and killed by vehicles, one died as a result of non-management related actions, and five were confirmed or suspected gunshot deaths.

A reward of up to $2,500 is being offered to anyone with information that leads to an arrest, criminal conviction, civil penalty or forfeiture of property for those responsible for killing the wolf.

The red wolf is protected under the Endangered Species Act.
