Update: 4 monkeys captured after mid-morning escape

MAPLE, N.C. -

Four Capuchin monkeys are in custody after they escaped their enclosure at a home near Wedgewood Lakes.

Currituck County deputies say they got a call from the homeowner just before noon on Thursday. The owner told them the monkeys might become vicious if cornered.

And at noon, they found out one person had been attacked and bitten by one of the monkeys. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment and has since received treatment and returned home.

He was bitten while assisting the owner with getting some of the monkeys back to the garage where they were kept at the residence.

The public was then notified by reverse 911 to be cautious and report any sightings. An area school was also notified that deputies would assist children to their buses if the monkeys hadn't been captured.

A short time later, 2 of the monkeys were captured, one was tranquilized and the fourth was still reportedly loose. It was located around 2:10, tranquilized, and then shot by lawmen.

The deceased monkey will be tested for rabies because someone was bitten. The other monkey had superficial wounds that were treated with antibiotics. It will be turned over to Animal Control.

All of the monkeys will be quarantined for a period of ten days.

Investigation into the incident continues.
