Part of US 13 to be closed for bridge replacement

Posted: Updated:

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A portion of U.S. 13 north of Windsor will be closed beginning next week so workers can begin construction of a new bridge over the Cashie River.

Beginning Monday, the N.C. Department of Transportation will close a stretch of the highway north of Windsor in Bertie County so Carolina Bridge Co. Inc. of Orangeburg, S.C. can replace the bridge

The bridge was constructed in 1924. It's now classified as structurally deficient and functionally obsolete.

A $2.2 million contract awarded in June calls for replacing the 24-foot-wide bridge with a 36 foot-wide bridge. The new span will include two, 12 foot-wide lanes and six foot-wide shoulders on each side. The current bridge has two 12-foot-wide lanes and no shoulders.

The bridge is scheduled to open by June 1, 2014.
