Oscar Winner Kevin Kline: "I've made a lot of probably stupid career choices"

Posted: Updated:
Academy Award-winning actor Kevin Kline says he chooses roles because they interest him at the moment, admitting some moves may have been “stupid,” in an interview with Tracy Smith for CBS SUNDAY MORNING WITH CHARLES OSGOOD to be broadcast Nov. 3, 2013 (9:00 AM, ET) on the CBS Television Network.

Kline, now starring in the CBS Films release LAST VEGAS alongside fellow Academy Award winners Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro and Michael Douglas, has by design shied away from big box-office oriented films.

Kline tells Smith he and Freeman have had the same agent for 35 years. During that time, Freeman would occasionally say, “Why don’t you want to do this movie? It’s going to be a very commercially successful movie,” Kline recalls.  “And I would say, ‘I’m sure it is, but I think it’s crap, I’m sorry.’”

“I just try to do what interests me at the moment,” Kline adds. “And I’ve made a lot of probably stupid career choices.”

Kline also talks with Smith about his Academy Award win and how his life – and career – changed after getting married to actress Phoebe Cates.  Cates, he tells Smith, stepped away from acting after their first child was born.

“It was her choice. Just the way she felt,” Kline says. “I admire it. But it was always one of the things I admired about Phoebe. She loved acting, but it wasn’t her life. For me, it was everything; I had no life. It’s just acting – once she had children, that was it.”

CBS SUNDAY MORNING is broadcast Sundays (9:00-10:30 AM, ET) on the CBS Television Network. Rand Morrison is the executive producer.
