NBA Hall of Famer, New Bern native Walt Bellamy dies

NEW BERN, N.C. -

NBA hall of famer and New Bern native, Walt Bellamy, has died. He was 74.

Bellamy, a former Knicks center, averaged 20.1 points in 14 seasons in the NBA, according to the Associated Press.

He won an Olympic gold medal in 1960 and was the first overall pick by the Chicago Packers in 1961. He was Rookie of the Year in 1962 and made the All-Star team four times.

Bellamy was enshrined in the Hall of Fame in 1993. He attended JT Barber High School in New Bern.

The Atlanta Hawks, Bellamy’s team from 1970-74, announced his death. No further details were provided.
