UNC's Fedora addresses midfield confrontation at NCSU

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

North Carolina football coach Larry Fedora said he had not seen what happened at midfield after the Tar Heels win at N.C. State on Saturday, but said rivalry games are "always heated."

UNC players celebrated on a new midfield insignia at Carter-Finley Stadium that showed an outline of the state of North Carolina with a Wolfpack logo in the center. N.C. State had painted it before this game as part of its ‘Our state" push.

Some UNC players celebrated at midfield and were soon confronted by Wolfpack players.

"I don't know exactly what went down, but I do know in rivalry games, it's always heated," Fedora said.  "That's part of it. There's a lot of passion involved, and guys want to win in the worst way on both sides of the ball. There are going to be some heated exchanges. It's just the nature of the beast."

WNCN sports reporter Todd Gibson asked Fedora if he had a policy about how he wants his players to act after games.

"We want to walk across the field and shake the opponents hand and then we are going to go in and talk about the game. That's our policy," Fedora said. "I don't have a ‘You can't talk to the other team' or you can't, you know.

"In every situation, we want to act with class. We want to be smart about what we do and act like we've been there before."

Gibson then asked Fedora if Fedora felt the UNC players had done that Saturday.

"To my knowledge, yes," Fedora said. "Again, I have not seen or heard anything about what happened. I was just in the middle of a lot of noise and a lot of talking."

N.C. State coach Dave Doeren, after the game, said, "I'm going to remember what they did on the 50-yard line after the game — when their guys came out and started jumping up and down on our logo — for the next 364 days, and I'm going to look forward to playing them next year. That's all I can do."
