McCrory holds 1st teacher advice committee meeting

Posted: Updated:

CARY, N.C. (AP) - Gov. Pat McCrory says teachers on his new advisory committee will have an important voice on how state government should improve teacher performance and pay, and how to handle standardized testing. But he said they won't provide the only input.

McCrory talked to reporters hours before Tuesday's first meeting of the Governor's Teacher Advisory Committee in Cary. The governor's 24-member panel is being led by New Hanover County middle school teacher Elizabeth Jones.

The governor said Tuesday that superintendents, parents and taxpayers in general also will have a seat at the table on teaching matters.

The meeting came a day after other teachers in the state held "walk ins" at schools in reaction to spending reductions and another year without a pay raise. Some teachers protested near McCrory's office.
