ECU Hoops tip off Friday - WNCT

ECU Hoops tip off Friday

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. -

The ECU men's and women's basketball teams start their 2013-14 campaigns on Friday at Minges Coliseum. The Lady Pirates play Virginia Intermont at 12 p.m. and the men host NC Wesleyan at 7 p.m.

Last season was one of the most exciting and successful years in ECU basketball history.

The men had their first 20 win season since 1954 and won the CIT, but this season you might have to temper those expectations because it's all new faces. In fact, 80 percent of the ECU scoring and rebounding from last season has either graduated or left the team. Among those noticeably absent, Miguel Paul and Maurice Kemp.

No doubt things are different, in fact coach Jeff Lebo told us Thursday his new look team is struggling to put the ball in the basket. That shouldn't be a problem in their first couple of games though. The Pirates play NC Wesleyan, UNCG and Chowan in their first three games.

"My message to this team is; what happened last year is last year," said ECU men's basketball Head Coach Jeff Lebo. "This is a new team, new expectations, new goals it was fun last year but last year is last year. Our focus now is on what we need to do to get better this year."

The ECU women's basketball program is in a similar situation to the men. After a WNIT bid the ladies lost a lot of talent to graduation. But Conference USA Coach of the Year, Heather Macy, is ready to lead her new look Pirates.

They play Friday and Sunday in Greenville and we'll have all the highlights from both games here on 9 on Your Side!
