Turtles now home at new NC sea turtle hospital

Posted: Updated:

SURF CITY, N.C. (AP) - Sea turtles have a new, more spacious place to recuperate on the North Carolina coast.

Turtles were moved Thursday to the new Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Surf City.

The new $2 million facility has more than 13,000 square feet of space. It replaces an old, one-room, cramped facility in Topsail Beach that had only 850 square feet.

The money for the new sea turtle hospital came from private donations.

Since 1996, almost 400 sea turtles have been rehabilitated and released from the hospital.

In the last year, 60 turtles have been treated and released.
