Just 1,700 in NC selected health plans; dismal numbers nationwide

Posted: Updated:
Just 1,700 North Carolina residents successfully signed up for health insurance plans during the first month of open enrollment.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said 30,000 applications to buy coverage for almost 58,000 people were completed on the government's marketplace for private insurance. Only 1,700 made it to the point that they bought plans or were ready to write a check.

15,000 North Carolina residents found out they were eligible for financial subsidies to buy coverage. Another 7,400 were determined to be eligible for Medicaid. That's the government health insurance program primarily for children and the disabled.

Across America, less than 27,000 people managed to enroll for health insurance in the 36 states relying on the problem-filled federal website for Obamacare.

That's lower than what was estimated. States running their own websites did better though, with more than 79,000 sign-ups.

Total private insurance enrollment was only about one-fifth what the administration had expected.

Enrollment totaled 106,185. Two months ago, the administration forecaste that 494,620 people would enroll the first month alone.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius thinks things will improve.
