Health Department hosts diabetes class

Posted: Updated:
As of 2011, $25.8 million children and adults in the United States were diagnosed with diabetes. The disease can cause stroke, high blood pressure and heart disease.

In honor of National Diabetes Awareness Month, the Pitt County Health Department, with support from a Vidant Medical Center Foundation Grant, hosted a Diabetes Awareness Event on Wednesday.

The workshop was held to help people understand how to manage or prevent type 2 diabetes. The American Diabetes Association wants people to know that diabetes does not stop and needs to be controlled.

Wednesday’s presenters say finding out that you have the disease may be tough, but say through education and awareness, anything is possible.

“You are not alone. We all go through periods of denial, anger and frustration. We all go through that, however there is hope. With the proper information you can do very well.” Minerva Freeman said.

Wednesday's event also featured a small cooking demonstration. It showed people that just because you have diabetes doesn't mean you can't eat the foods that you like.
