Durham student dies after 'probable case' of meningitis

Posted: Updated:

The Durham Health Department is investigating what it calls a "probable case" of bacterial meningitis after a 5-year-old student died.

The girl went to Mount Zion Christian Academy in Durham, where classes were canceled Thursday following the development, so the school could be cleaned as a precaution. The child's mother works at the daycare on-site, according to the school.

Health officials stress parents do not need to be alarmed but could not confirm where the girl contracted the bacterial infection.

"This is not an outbreak," said Eric Nickens of the Durham Department of Public Health. "This is a very isolated incident."

Nine other children and the family of the child who died were given preventive antibiotics.

The name of the girl was not released.
