Raleigh's new city manager takes office

RALEIGH, N.C. -

The city of Raleigh's newest city manager started his first day on the job on Monday. Ruffin Hall says he's excited and ready to work.

WNCN talked to Hall on his first day to ask about his goals and the challenges he faces in the new position.

Hall is from Fayetteville and has about 18 years of experience managing local government. He's worked in Chapel Hill, Wilmington, Durham, and most recently Charlotte, where he was assistant city manager.

Hall is replacing Russell Allen, who previously held the city manager position for 12 years.

Allen was fired earlier this year after a 6-2 city council vote. Council members unanimously voted in Hall to fill the position.

Hall says his initial focus will be on transportation, economic development, and managing the city's continued growth.

He says there are already great assets in place in the city, and his job is to work with the mayor and council to make those assets better.

"It's got a great group of staff, it's got some fantastic assets in the community and it's really growing strong. That really represents the opportunity to take the organization to another level," said Hall.

The council agreed on a $215,000 salary for Hall.
