NASA’s MAVEN headed to Mars

Posted: Updated:
FLORIDA -

We have lift-off!  NASA's newest spacecraft is now on its way to Mars.

The Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN, or MAVEN as it's called, took off from Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

MAVEN has a long journey ahead.  It's not expected to get to Mars until September of 2014.  Once it arrives, NASA hopes MAVEN will help researchers learn more about the planet's climate and atmosphere.

The price tag on this mission is an estimated $671 million.
