UNC looking at changes to Smith Center

Posted: Updated:
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

The University of North Carolina is looking at renovating or possibly replacing the Smith Center, spokesman Steve Kirschner confirmed Tuesday.

Kirschner said UNC started looking into changes within the past six months and is in the early stages of evaluating its options.

"Anything's possible," Kirschner said.

Carolina began playing at the Smith Center in 1986, moving out of the smaller Carmichael Auditorium in the heart of campus. The Smith Center seats 21,750 for basketball but the concourses are now considered tight for big crowds.

Kirschner said UNC is having discussions with 360 Architecture in Kansas City for renovations and there are no conceptual designs yet.

Once Carolina gets costs and designs from the architects, the school will have a better idea of what the cost of renovations will be. At that point, UNC can weigh the costs of renovations against the cost of a new building.

Kirschner did not offer a time frame for the changes.
