NC Senate budget-writer Brunstetter to resign

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. - A chief budget-writer in the North Carolina Senate is leaving to become a top executive at a large hospital system.

Sen. Pete Brunstetter said Thursday's he's going to become executive vice president and chief legal officer of Novant Health in Winston-Salem.

Brunstetter says he's resigning from the Senate next month because the new position is incompatible with serving in the legislature, given the many health care policies on which he works there. He says he does not expect to be a registered legislative lobbyist for Novant.

Brunstetter says he's pleased with his legislative accomplishments on medical malpractice and regulatory changes. He's disappointed lawmakers failed to find a long-term solution for controlling Medicaid costs before his departure.
