Men find bomb inside teddy bear

SHELBY, N.C. -

Two men in Shelby, North Carolina found a bomb inside a teddy bear.  They called 911 and now state police are on the case.  The man said his cousin found the bear on the side of the road while delivering papers near Lattimore Thursday morning. That man brought it to his home near downtown Shelby on West Graham St. When something fell out of the bear they put it on the porch and called 911.

Caller: "We found something. It looks like somebody tried to make a bomb out of it and we have it right here in our possession and I want to know if it's possible you can come get it?"

There were wires attached to the object that fell out of the bear and it smelled like gasoline.

Dispatcher: "Well, don't touch it anymore, okay?  Leave it where it's at."

A passerby snapped a picture of the Gastonia bomb squad at the house. Neighbor Jessica Burge is stunned. She has a young son.

"I'm just trying to figure out why would you put a bomb in a teddy bear in the first place,” she said.  “If anybody would have picked it up it would have been a child."

Shelby Police are asking the same question.  “You look at the damage it could do to people around it,” said Chief Jeff Ledford.

The ATF has the bear and the bomb. A federal crime lab will take it apart and inspect it. Police are looking into how it got left on the side of a country road.
