Onslow County Sheriff's Office to sell extra guns to public

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. -

A local county is planning to raise some big bucks by selling some of the sheriff's office's old guns.

The Onslow County Sheriff's Office has 157 extra guns, including revolvers, shotguns, and handguns, according to a county commissioners agenda.

On Monday commissioners decided to let the sheriff's office sell the guns to the public.

Commissioners say the guns are worth thousands of dollars, but they won't be up for sale until they establish a fair market price for the firearms.

All the money raised in the gun sale will go into Onslow County's general fund.

"The main objective in my book is to get the most from any property that belongs to the taxpayers…to try to get the best for the taxpayer," said Sheriff Ed Brown of the Onslow County Sheriff's Office.

Commissioners say the sheriff's office bought the guns years ago, but they're getting old and they've already been replaced.
