GREENVILLE, N.C. -

Monday, the North Carolina NAACP and people living in Belhaven brought the fight to save Pungo Vidant Hospital to Greenville.

The hospital is set to close in a few months and will be replaced with a 24-hour multi-specialty clinic.

Critics, including Belhaven Mayor Adam O' Neal say it's all about the money for Vidant. Vidant says the hospital is costing them nearly $2 million a year to operate.

Speakers included state NAACP President Reverend William Barber and Mayor O'Neal.

Mayor O'Neal told 9 On Your Side Vidant Medical Center forgot their mission statement which he says is to promote healthcare in Eastern North Carolina.

During the rally, NAACP speakers did mention a possible lawsuit, but no official plans have been laid out.

Vidant Medical Center officials are scheduled to have a meeting on Tuesday.
