Thanksgiving Will Put One Day A Week Trash Pickup To The Test

Augusta, GA -

The Gardenhires were getting supplies for a big Thanksgiving, but they know that's going to create a big amount of trash. "I don't know how we're going to do it, our trash it comes on Thursday so they won't pick up until Friday," said Vera Gardenhire, who was loading groceries in her car with the help of her daughter.

Sharon Livengood is having about a dozen over for Thanksgiving, but her garbage pickup isn't until Monday, and that means a lot of trash and a long wait for pickup. "Right," she said. "What's that going to do to your can?" we asked. "It's going to drive me nuts, she answered.

It's going to be a lot of trash...a whole bunch of trash, and with it...as windy as it is, if you can't close the top you're going to have garbage everywhere," said Carrie Chaney.

The city doesn't want trash everywhere so there are holiday rules in place for the city's private haulers. The rules allow customers to bypass a full can and put their extra trash bags on the street for pickup.

"You put it in your trash bag, preferably tied, and at least three feet away from your container and we will service it," says James Morrison, operations manager for Inland Services, which is one of the city's private haulers.

But, put those extra bags next to the can, not on top. "...because we have automated arms and they can't dump something on top of the can," said Morrison.

So, it's a plan to make one day a week service work during a heavy trash time, but do trash customers think this is a good way to handle it?

"If they use the tie up bags, that might work. If there are no dogs or cats around, squirrels to tear the bags open," said Chaney.

"That's the only problem with it, they won't be in the container so it's going to be hard to keep it all together," added Gardenhire.

"It will be a mess with all the wild animals," said Livengood.

The extra bag policy will run through next Wednesday and won't count against the rule of allowing customers five extra bags of trash per quarter.

There will be no garbage pickup Thanksgiving Day, so Thursday customers will see service Friday, and Friday customers will get picked up on Saturday.

The extra bag rules will also apply for Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
