DURHAM, N.C. -

A new pedestrian bridge crossing Interstate 40 in Durham is now expected to be completed by January 2014.

The bridge, which connects the American Tobacco Trail near Southpoint Mall, was originally scheduled to be completed in July but problems with safety fencing is causing the delay, the City of Durham reported.

The contractor should have a fix in the next few days allowing the fencing to be completed. The City of Durham will not have to pay for that cost.

Also, the North Carolina Department of Transportation will review possible solutions to puddling on the bridge next week.

The puddling will not cause further delays, the city said.

A city spokesperson emphasizes the $11 million bridge is not over budget.
