Truck wreck snarls traffic on Interstate 85

Posted: Updated:
GASTONIA, N.C. -

All northbound lanes of Interstate 85 in Gastonia are open to traffic after an accident led to a fuel spill that tied up motorists as the Thanksgiving travel period geared up.

A statement from the Gastonia Fire Department said there are still residual delays on the interstate as a result of the accident Wednesday.

Fire officials said units responded to the accident near exit 17 around 12:55 p.m.

Officials said a car collided with a tractor trailer. The collision ruptured the saddle tank of the tractor trailer, spilling approximately 60 to 80 gallons of diesel fuel over three lanes and closing the northbound side of the interstate.

A hazardous materials team plugged the leaking tank and transferred the remaining fuel.

I-85 was shut down for more than two hours.
