NCDOT makes more inspections of Bonner Bridge

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. - Crews from the N.C. Department of Transportation are conducting additional inspections of the Bonner Bridge to ensure the safety of motorists along the Outer Banks.
The inspections began on Friday and will continue on Saturday.
A statement from the department on Friday said routine sonar scanning recently found more areas where sand has eroded from the bridge's support structures. Additional scans and inspections will allow engineers to examine the area in greater detail.
The department said the Bonner Bridge is open and safe for travel.
The bridge is the only route for motorists between Hatteras Island and the mainland. If NCDOT has to close it, the N.C. Ferry Division would provide emergency support.
