Highway Patrol: 10 drivers killed during Thanksgiving holiday period

RALEIGH, N.C. -

The North Carolina Highway Patrol has announced a preliminary number of people killed on the roadways during the Thanksgiving holiday travel period.

Highway patrol said 10 people died this year between Wednesday, Nov. 27 and Sunday Dec. 1.

Last year during the Thanksgiving holiday travel period; there were 11 fatal crashes and 432 crashes that resulted in injuries. Many of these crashes were the result of excessive speed.

Speed remains the leading cause of traffic collisions and fatalities in North Carolina as well as across the country.
