CARRBORO, N.C. -

The investigation into a former University of North Carolina student's death remains open, but Carrboro police say they are at a standstill.

David Shannon was a freshman at UNC when he fell to his death at the Ready Mixed Concrete Plant in Carrboro a year ago. He died of blunt trauma to the head, neck and torso.

A medical examiner's report revealed Shannon had a blood alcohol level of .22 percent at the time of his death. Carrboro police  are "highly confident" that people know what happened to Shannon and they are "imploring" those people to come forward.

The police department had been exploring whether hazing led to Shannon's death.

A month before the incident in October 2012, the Daily Tar Heel reported that the fraternity system was investigating nine reports of hazing among multiple chapters.

Shannon joined Chi Phi as a freshman.

Last week, Chi Phi's Alpha-Alpha Chapter in Chapel Hill was suspended, "effectively ceasing all Chapter operations, until the conclusion of the Fraternity's judicial process."

Also last week, UNC spokeswoman Susan Hudson said Shannon's death was not directly related to Chi Phi's suspension. Hudson said Shannon's death remained an ongoing investigation with the Carrboro Police Department.

Hudson also confirmed a second UNC fraternity, Pi Lambda Phi, was also being investigated by the university.
