NC GOP critics to picket stores Pope company owns

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - There's been a rare back-and-forth between the leader of forces opposed to laws approved by North Carolina Republicans and an activist whose family money has helped promote conservative policies.

The Rev. William Barber of the North Carolina NAACP and State Budget Director Art Pope spoke briefly Monday outside the government office building where Pope works.

Barber and his allies were holding a news conference urging Pope to renounce GOP initiatives approved by Gov. Pat McCrory and the legislature. They plan to picket outside discount stores owned by Pope's family business.

Pope asked Barber whether he was trying to close Maxway, Roses and other stores that create jobs in communities. Barber told Pope he wants him to use his wealth to provide better employee wages.
