Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lights up The Big Apple

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK -

The Christmas season has officially begun in The Big Apple.

New York City’s famous Rockefeller Center tree was lit last night during the 81st annual lighting ceremony.

Out-going Mayor Michael Bloomberg flipped the switch.

The 75-yr.-old Norway Spruce was donated by a couple in Connecticut.  It weighs about 12-tons.

The tree is decorated with 45,000 LED lights and a nearly 10- foot wide Swarovski crystal star on top.
