Parking Could Be Headed To Prime Downtown Augusta Property

Augusta, GA -

Is parking the best plan for some prime downtown Augusta real estate?

It was in the notice for Tuesday’s public hearing on the city's Urban Redevelopment Plan. There's a project to construct parking on the Depot site at 6th Street and Reynolds Street. The reason negotiations are underway is to bring up to 400 jobs to Fort Discovery. If that happens, more parking will be needed.

But, Mayor Pro-Tem Corey Johnson says parking isn't the best long term use of that valuable parcel. “We're talking about implementing parking at the Depot. It's going to come at a cost and some design work and all that other stuff, there's going to be some things we truly have to look at as a body, but again I don't believe we should use that property solely for parking,” he says.

Johnson says the site has been discussed for a possible performing arts center and wants to know how parking would be carved out for Port Royal employees if that project happens.

Meanwhile, Johnson says he expects an announcement on whether the firm will be moving into Fort Discovery in about a month.
