Follow-up NC audit finds NCTracks problems

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The State Auditor's office says a new North Carolina Medicaid billing program falls short on addressing defects in the computer system and that government-mandated changes haven't been completed on time.

The performance audit from Auditor Beth Wood was released Monday - the day before legislators again get a formal update on the NCTracks system. It came online July 1 and replaced a system first turned on in the late 1970s. The price tag is several hundred million dollars.

The audit is a follow-up report to one in May that found NCTracks hadn't been fully tested. The new report says NCTracks has encountered more than 3,200 system defects.

The Department of Health and Human Services says the defects are significantly less than the industry average for a similarly-situated software system.
