Currituck officials press NCDOT for mid-county bridge

Posted: Updated:
CURRITUCK, N.C. - Officials in Currituck County say they recently met with North Carolina Department of Transportation officials about the long-delayed construction of a Mid-Currituck Bridge.

They say NCDOT considers building a bridge over the Currituck Sound the best solution to reducing the county’s traffic congestion.

A December 3 meeting outlined project costs, re-locating Aydlett Road, the extent of widening NC 12, potential construction partners, NCDOT’s approval process and what Currituck County can do to help move the project forward.

NCDOT says the $460 million price tag is due to the nearly seven mile length of the bridge and that a proposed public/private partnership isn’t finalized. A change to Aydlett Road would further delay the project.

However, widening NC 12 in Corolla is essential to avoiding traffic back-ups. But improving existing road alone wouldn’t provide much benefit without the Mid-Currituck Bridge.

NCDOT also suggested contributing local funds to the project, but the Board of Commissioners hasn’t decided on its next course of action.
