DURHAM, N.C. -

But an exhibit on wheels is bringing undeveloped countries to our area.

The free, self-guided tour uses iPods to describe what you're seeing as you walk  through a child's journey of poverty.

To the change in their life after being sponsored by Compassion International.

Julian Alum from Uganda is a former sponsored child.

Alum is at the exhibit to tell first hand how she had to stop school at age seven to work.

Until someone sponsored her through Compassion International.

She said she was then able to go to school five days a week, get together with other sponsored kids, and eat a meal each week.

"I guess if I hadn't had the opportunity to be sponsored through Compassion, I would have been a victim of even early pregnancies because girls at the age of nine, 10, 12, they were forced into marriage," Alum said.

Alum has now earned a masters degree. and is sponsoring a child herself.

After walking through the exhibit, visitors can select a child to sponsor. A child can be sponsored for $38 per month.

That covers education fees, medical care, lunch, and letter writing.

The exhibit is set up through Monday at New hope Church in Durham. The cross-country tour will stop at more than 35 locations and travel 65,000 miles across the United States this year.

Visitors are encouraged to make reservations online.
