STEDMAN, N.C. -
A Cumberland County woman is facing charges for taking more than $10,000 from a cancer charity.
Maranda Damico, 34, of Stedman, was taken into custody Monday morning. She is facing embezzlement charges after allegedly stealing $10,839.60 from the Swamp Boys and Fishing to Fight Cancer Foundation.
The investigation determined the crime occurred between April 28, 2012 and Oct. 15, 2013 when Damico was treasurer and in charge of bookkeeping.
Authorities say Damico was taking cash that was collected during a fundraiser in which more than $7,000 in cash was raised. She allegedly used other donations for personal loans and other various expenses without the consent or knowledge of the foundation.
Damico was placed in the Cumberland County Detention Center under a $10,000 unsecured bond. She will make her first court appearance Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in the Detention Center courtroom.
