Their list is made of more than 1700 children, varying in ages and gift requests and The Salvation Army of Augusta normally delivers these gifts to each child on their list. This year some could be left out.
Major Tony Perez, Area Commander for the Salvation Army explains "we need about 750 toys is what it is."
This need is generated through their annual Christmas toy drive called the Angel Tree program where angels are put on a tree for families in the community to adopt.
"It's usually the infants, 2,3, 4, 5, 6, 7 year olds who are adopted first. This age group always gets left out," he adds.
That age group is boys and girls 9 to 12 years old. Though toys and boxes fill several sections in the Christmas Warehouse, these piles are not enough.
Once you get to the area for 9-12 year olds, as you can see here the section is almost completely empty. Something the Salvation Army is asking for your help in changing before delivering gifts.
Perez says "we're talking about waking up on Christmas morning and not having toys for them. We're talking about children who might not have anything if the Salvation Army doesn't help them."
A scenario Perez has never faced in 15 years of working with the program. He predicts the toy shortage is because Thanksgiving was a week later, giving the Salvation Army a shorter time span to raise donations.
He shares "we are behind financially, in toys, in everything because of that one week. We're talking six days, but that has substantially hurt us."
Now, just hours before delivery day the Salvation Army is asking you to help them provide Christmas gifts to families who may not have anything else.
Perez pleads "we need help."
The Salvation Army Emergency Canteen will be accepting toy donations at the KROC Center and their Christmas Warehouse on Wrightsboro Road tomorrow from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.
