DEVELOPING ON 6: Richmond County Coroner Arrested On Theft Charge

Richmond County Coroner Grover Tuten, 70, was taken into custody Thursday by FBI agents and Richmond County Sheriff's Office investigators.

arrest has come as a shock to many people in the CSRA.

Tuten was Deputy Coroner for more than 20 years before being elected to lead the Richmond County Sheriff's Office 9 years ago.

Tuten has also won many awards for his work in law enforcement, as well as various acts of service in the community.

According to the FBI, he was arrested on a state warrant for Theft by Taking. The investigation was conducted by the FBI, District Attorney's Office, U.S. Attorney's Office, as well at the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.

Earlier Thursday afternoon, the Sheriff's Office sent a news release acknowledging that the office has the right to make the arrest.

The release stated, "As part of the ongoing investigation, information surfaced that county property and/or employees may be subjected to potential harm."

Since Tuten's arrest, Richmond County Sheriff's Office deputies are also providing security at the Richmond County Coroner's Office during the investigation.

Righ now, all agencies involved are being tight-lipped about this arrest, but we are told the investigation is ongoing.

New information has been released concerning the arrest of Richmond County Coroner Grover Tuten.

A Richmond County Sheriff's Office spokesperson tells us they were called in to assist the FBI and District Attorney's office in the execution of arrest warrants on an elected county official.

As part of the ongoing investigation, information surfaced that "county property and/or employees may be subjected to potential harm".

Under the authority of the Georgia Constitution, the Sheriff, as the county's chief law enforcement officer who's sworn duty is to act as the "Conservator of the peace" has the right and the duty to "enforce laws enacted for the protection of the lives, persons, property, health, and morals of the people". As such, the Richmond County Sheriff's Office has temporarily assumed authority of the Richmond County Coroner's Office and personnel employed the office.

WJBF News Channel 6 has learned Richmond County Coroner Grover Tuten has been arrested.

We are told Tuten, 70, was arrested Thursday by the FBI and charged with Theft by Taking.

The charge is a state charge, but the case is being handled by the FBI because Tuten is a coroner.

According to Jim Harrison, a Supervisory Senior Resident Agent with the FBI, the FBI, Richmond County Sheriff's Office, District Attorney's office and U.S. Attorney's Office all worked on the investigation.
