GREENVILLE, N.C. -

The East Carolina women's basketball team used a strong offensive attack and stout defense in the second half to roll past Ohio, 76-47, at Minges Coliseum on Friday night. The Pirates' defense put up 10 blocks to rank fourth in the team single-game record book, while redshirt junior post Ondrea Shaw posted six blocks of her own to tie for second in the single-game annals.

In addition to tallying a career-best six blocks, Shaw added a season-high eight points and six rebounds. While Shaw led the defensive attack, redshirt sophomore forward Jada Payne paced the offense with a game-high 24 points to mark her 10th game in which she recorded double-figures. Payne also contributed six boards, a career-high five assists, and a game-best four steals. Kristine Mial, a senior forward, notched 12 points in the contest, while freshman guard J'Kyra Brown registered 11. Brown added a career-high three steals to go along with one rebound and one block, while Mial grabbed six boards.

The East Carolina (10-1) defense was solid as it held Ohio (4-5) to just 27.6-percent shooting in the game. The Pirates recorded 32 defensive rebounds in the contest as sophomore guard Colleen Marshall dished out a season-high five boards, four of which came on defense. Junior forward Tatiana Chapple added to the Pirates' 10 blocks as she posted two which set a new career-best for the Columbus, Ohio native. She also recorded three rebounds, all defensive, and an assist.

Despite being down by two (35-33) at halftime, the Pirates came out on a hot streak in the second half as they kicked off the frame on a 17-2 run to take a 50-37 advantage over the Bobcats. ECU's offense shot 60-percent (15-for-25) in the final 20 minutes of action, while the Pirate defense limited Ohio to just 11.5-percent shooting (3-for-26). East Carolina did not allow Ohio one three-point field goal in the second half as the Bobcats were 0-for-9 from beyond the arc. Additionally, the Pirates out-scored the Bobcats 43-12 in the frame.

East Carolina used several runs in the second half to turn as much as an eight-point deficit (22-14) from the first half into a 29-point (76-47) victory. The Pirates held the Bobcats scoreless for nearly four-minutes in the frame, while ECU went on a 10-0 run to break the game open.

In the second half alone, Payne recorded 16 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Shaw notched five of her six blocks in the final 20 minutes of the contest, while adding four points and three boards.

Although Ohio led in the first half, 35-33, the Pirates still held the edge in bench points (15-7), assists (3-2), blocks (3-1) and steals (5-3) in the frame. ECU also forced the Bobcats into eight turnovers in the first half and collected five points off of turnovers.

In the game, the Pirates shot 43.6-percent from the field and out-rebounded Ohio 41-38. East Carolina also posted 10 assists to the Bobcats' two, 10 blocks, while Ohio notched a pair, and 14 steals to Ohio's eight. ECU finished the game with 14 points off of the Bobcats' 22 turnovers and outscored the visitor's bench 32-10.

Ohio was led offensively by sophomore forward Lexie Baldwin who recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Redshirt sophomore guard Kat Yelle added nine points with two boards and one steal.

Following a nine-day hiatus for the winter break holidays, East Carolina will return to action on Saturday, December 29, at Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach, Fla. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
