Aiken County, S.C. - The Golden Harvest Food Bank normally partners with distributors all over the CSRA to get food out to families, but now so many families need food that they’re handing it out straight from the warehouse.

Deborah Heath was the first person to line up in front of the Aiken Golden Harvest Food Bank at 7 am.

“We watched them come out on the fork lift, and just put everything all together, it was just so exciting,” said Heath.

Heath was diagnosed with the blood disease, Lupus, exactly a year ago. She hasn’t been able to work for 4 years because of her health issues.

She said from the food stamp cuts, it’s been very hard getting by this year. This food will help her family get through the next ten days.

“It means the world to me because I mean I got a meal I don’t have to worry about,” said Heath.

Before her health problems, Heath said she would be the one giving out the food.

“I was the type of person that volunteered and gave back when I could, so I now I am actually learning something new myself because I am one of the people that’s getting something when I gave back over the years,” said Heath.

With the food stamp cuts this fall, the average household has $36 less to spend on groceries per month.

Aiken Golden Harvest Food Bank Chief Development Officer Mike Gibbons said families are taking a hard hit this holiday season.

“We get grocery store donations, we have corporate donations, and individual giving is huge. We have large food drives that come straight from the community, and an important part of that is being able to take this and hand it right back to members in the community,” said Heath.

Gibbons said the goal is to make sure no one goes without food.

Reaching that goal helps makes the holidays brighter for those who just need a helping hand.

“This year is actually the best Christmas to me. I haven’t gotten that many gifts or anything, but this year it just feels so special,” said Heath.
