Judge rules NC possum drop can go forward

Posted: Updated:
In the mountains of North Carolina, the town of Brasstown will drop a live possum on New Year’s Eve.

Despite plenty of attempts by PETA and the Wildlife Resources Commission, a judge decided last week the town can go forward with its annual event.

The tiny community in the far western corner of North Carolina, near the Georgia line, puts a possum in a cage and lowers it at midnight.

PETA argued the lights and crowd stressed the animal out. But a judge says, since the General Assembly approved a state permit for the drop, it's okay for them to do it.
