Firefighters deliver hope, toys to deserving Greenville family

GREENVILLE, N.C. - A Christmas surprise always makes a great story this time of year.

And Tuesday morning, several firefighters gave one Greenville family some hope when they had none for the holidays.

It was nearly a year ago that Katrina Smith and her kids lost everything they had. A fire ripped through their home just after Christmas. And, this year has been rather tough for them to get back on their feet.

But, today, like every day, firefighters came to the rescue, delivering more than a dozen toys to the Smith family.

The expressions on their faces were priceless; their smiles larger than life.

This Christmas, it was unlikely any of them would get very much. Katrina Smith says she’s so grateful and in awe from the community's generosity.

"I just think that it's so thoughtful. Like I said, they've never experienced something like this. So it's a shock. I have no words right now. That's how surprised and shocked I was," said Katrina Smith, surprised mother.

"The crew that got this together today actually met these kids personally on an EMS call and they really were touched by this family and they felt that the kids were very deserving to have these gifts on Christmas," said Chief Eric Griffin, Greenville Fire & Rescue.
