Veterans concerned over military pension cut

ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C. -

Veterans are up in arms over a bill that cuts military pensions.

President Barack Obama signed a budget bill on Thursday that cuts spending over two years, averting a government shutdown.

But it includes a controversial one percent drop to veterans' cost of living adjustment. It affects veterans under the age of 62 with at least 20 years of military service.

The measure would save more than 6 billion dollars over ten years.

Senator Kay Hagan introduced legislation to restore those cuts.

"The people who have served need all their benefits that they get because a lot of them aren't getting treatment or the medical help they need, and we need every cent of our pensions that we are allowed to get," said Debra Dunning, a resident of Jacksonville, Florida visiting Atlantic Beach. Her husband was a Navy veteran.

Congressman Walter Jones voted against the budget bill.
