New Bern proposes upgrading city park

Posted: Updated:

Big upgrades could be coming to a park in New Bern. The city is proposing renovations to the park at 811 George Street.

Right now the two acre site has a playground, basketball court, and tennis court. The proposal is to convert the tennis court into a skate park, and build a picnic shelter, along with more sidewalks around the perimeter of the park.

The parks and recreation department is hoping to receive a grant to fund the renovations.

"Well, as long as it helps the community and is better for the community, I'd say yes. If it stops kids from playing in the street, so forth and so on, I'm for it," said New Bern resident Doug Alvey.

City public information officer Colleen Roberts referred questions about the cost of the proposed renovation to Parks and Recreation Director Thurman Hardison.

Hardison did not return an email or voicemail.

The city will hold a public meeting on the proposal at the Stanley White Recreation Center on January 13 at 5:30 PM.
