A Fayetteville woman died Tuesday after Cumberland County troopers say she drove head-on into a lieutenant's cruiser.

The incident happened after 10:30 p.m. Monday near Camden Road between Fayetteville and Hope Mills.

Deputy Jonathan Perkins responded to a call in the 2400 block of Gray Goose Loop. A man reported that his girlfriend was suicidal and he needed help. When Perkins arrived, Rebecca Holmes, 42, backed her SUV into the patrol car and took off, according to authorities.

Holmes was traveling in a curve on Camden Road near Crystal Springs Road when she drove directly into the path of Lt. Shawna Leake who was responding to provide backup to Perkins. Holmes hit Leake's cruiser head-on, according to the Sheriff's office.

Holmes was not wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene. Leake suffered a severe cut on her hand and a broken ankle.

Perkins was not injured.

Leake has 14 years of service with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office. Perkins has seven years of service.
