Deputies: Store owner fights back during robbery

Posted: Updated:
The Pitt County Sheriff’s department says the owner of Hills Convenience Store fired his weapon at a man who was trying to rob him last night.

The incident happened last night at 10:15pm outside the Hills Convenience Store on Highway 43 in Pitt County. The store’s owner was taking out the trash when someone hit him in the back of the head with what the owner says was the butt of the gun.

Christy Wallace of the Pitt County Sheriff’s department says the owner had his personal weapon on him during the attempted robbery, and he shot at the attacker. The would-be robber ran off towards the mobile homes near the store.

Deputies only know the man had a tee-shirt over his face. They don’t believe there is any surveillance where the incident happened outside the store.

This is the fourth robbery at the store this year. Two people were arrested in connection with the earlier robberies.

Wallace also says the department is encouraging people who carry weapons to defend themselves to get proper training and practice in firing their weapon. She says this practice will help prevent others from being unintentionally injured when individuals protect themselves.
