JONESBOROUGH, TN (WJHL) - Darlene Denis was selected as a finalist for the Mars One mission to mars. Mars One’s aims to create the first human colony on mars. More than 200,000 people applied and only 1,057 made the first cut. Darlene Denis is one of them.

Denis is currently the store manager of her family's general store, The Store, in Jonesborough.

But Denis has bigger plans.

"I know that sounds really odd that you'd want to leave everything you know behind but i just think it's such an amazing opportunity," said Denis.

Denis’ journey would take her 34,8 million miles away. So what made Darlene Denis want to go to Mars?

"I saw on the internet that mars one was asking people to apply for a one way trip to mars to colonize, so i sent them an email saying I was interested… I'm not a scientist. i didn't go to college for space or anything like that. So when mars one said anybody could apply, I thought well what would it hurt to try?" said Denis.

Her partner, Roger Michael, also applied for the program but was not chosen as a finalist. He says regardless, he's excited for her.

"I'm happy that she's going to get the opportunity to go. But it's also sort of sad to know that she'll be gone….the rest of her life," said Michael.

If selected as a finalist Denis will train for several years leading up to the launch.

"The training involves everything from medical and dental care to equipment everything that we need to know for those that are traveling to mars and the habitats once we get there. As well as psychological training because we'll be stuck with each other for the rest of our lives," said Denis.

She said if selected, she will miss her family the most, but the opportunity is to great to pass up.
