New laws ranging from marijuana to guns take effect nationwide today. Colorado becomes the first state to sell marijuana for recreational use. Washington is expected to follow suit later this year.
Stricter gun laws focusing on assault weapons go into effect today in Connecticut and New York. Both laws were passed after the Sandy Hook tragedy.
The minimum wage is on the rise in two states this year. Beginning today in Ohio, it rises a nickel to $7.95 per hour. In California, it will go from eight-to-nine dollars an hour in July.
Later today, the 125th annual Rose Parade will get underway in Pasadena. The New Year's Day event is expected to draw about 700,000 people.
