RALEIGH, N.C. -

A 62-year-old cyclist from Willow Springs has been suspended for two years after testing positive for prohibited substances, the governing body of cycling said in a news release.

David LeDuc tested positive for the presence of a steroid of exogenous origin, recombinant human erythropoietin ("rhEPO") and amphetamine, a prohibited stimulant. The United States Anti-Doping Agency said a urine sample collected from LeDuc on Sept. 6, 2013, at the Masters Road National Championships in Bend, Ore., tested positive.

LeDuc accepted the sanction Dec. 24.

"I told them don't even waste your time testing the ‘B' sample, I'm guilty," LeDuc told The News & Observer in a telephone interview. "They said, 'Well, since you're not going to contest it, we'll give you the minimum penalty of two years.'"

LeDuc has been a national competitive racer and is one of the best-known racers in the Triangle.

He began racing in 1980 after being inspired by the classic cycling film, "Breaking Away."  He was the 2001 World Road Race Champ for age 50-53 and has won multiple national titles.

In a 2006 interview with a Virginia newspaper, LeDuc said, "As long as I've got a pulse, I'll keep racing. It's getting hard because they keep getting faster and I keep getting slower. But I'll do it until they put my last nail in my coffin."
