Duke forum highlights education reform

Posted: Updated:

A select group of students at Duke University are learning to rethink education.

They are part of "Rethink Education: The Innovation Challenge", which is giving undergrads a chance to compete in crafting fresh ideas for educating the next generation. At the end, an expert panel will judge the student proposals. Winning plans will be awarded prize money to help translate the ideas into real-world solutions.

"They are learning how to work together collaboratively," says Leslie Babinski of Duke University. "We're putting them in an intense situation."

Duke's Ken Dodge added, "Where they realize a problem in the world in education, and their potential to help be a part of the solution."

The symposium continues tomorrow and early into the week, with former Governor Jim Hunt speaking to students. Former Governor Beverly Perdue spoke Sunday.
