Arrest made in Havelock High School bomb threat

Posted: Updated:
HAVELOCK, N.C. - Police have arrested a teen for a bomb threat that forced hundreds of high school students out of the classroom on Tuesday and another on Thursday.

18 year old Fredrick L. Thomas was charged with Making a False Bomb Report/Public Building in violation of North Carolina General Statute 14-69.1C.

Investigators assisted by the School Resource Officer found the cell phone used in both incidents and later identified Thomas as being in possession of the phone.  Additional information led to Thomas’ arrest. He's in the Craven County Jail under a $75,000 secured  bond.

The Craven County school system ordered Havelock High School to evacuate after someone called 911 about a bomb threat at 10:22 Tuesday morning.

It was too cold outside, so the students were brought to Havelock Middle School, while a bomb squad searched the high school with K-9 units.

"The police thankfully did not find any devices," said Craven County school spokesperson Jennifer Wagner.

Students say an announcement over the loudspeaker told them that everything was OK, but they needed to exit the building calmly. Students say they didn't find out it was a bomb threat until after they had evacuated.

"I think it's really dumb that you would bomb threat a school. Like, what's in your mind? That's not the smartest thing. It really upsets me," said Adrionna Young, Havelock High School student.

School officials say students who ride the bus went home on buses, and parents who wished to pick up their child went to Havelock Middle School with proper identification. Students who drove to school were transported by bus to Havelock High School to get their vehicles.

Havelock High School has 1,109 students, said Wagner.
